Study Area:

The Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) of Pharping Hydropower Plant was conducted in Pharping, located in the Makwanpur District. The plant, historically significant as one of Nepal’s earliest hydropower stations, presented an opportunity for comprehensive 3D scanning to assess its current condition and facilitate potential renovation or optimization efforts.

The terrain around the Pharping Hydropower Plant is a mix of man-made structures and natural features, making it essential to utilize precise scanning technologies to capture both infrastructure details and the surrounding landscape. TLS was employed for its high accuracy and ability to produce detailed 3D point clouds of the area.

Project Objectives:

Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS): The main objective was to capture high-resolution 3D point cloud data of the Pharping Hydropower Plant using TLS technology. This data would aid in creating detailed models of the plant’s infrastructure, including turbines, pipelines, and the surrounding terrain.

Infrastructure Assessment: By using TLS, the project aimed to identify structural changes or wear in the plant’s components. The data collected would assist engineers in evaluating the plant’s condition and planning for maintenance or upgrades.

Digital Modeling: The TLS data was processed to generate comprehensive 3D models of the hydropower plant. These models were used for further analysis, project planning, and documentation of the site’s historical significance.

Deliverables:

3D Point Cloud Data: Detailed 3D point clouds of the Pharping Hydropower Plant and surrounding landscape were generated. These models provided an accurate representation of the plant’s physical infrastructure, which could be used for various engineering and maintenance purposes.

Digital Surface Models (DSM): DSMs created from TLS data offered a surface-level understanding of the plant and its surroundings, helping to identify any topographical or structural challenges.

Infrastructure Models: Detailed 3D models of the plant’s components, such as pipelines, turbines, and auxiliary structures, were prepared for infrastructure assessment and future  development plans.
